Sheila Rohan began studying dance at her neighborhood dance schools in Staten Island. She went on to more intensive training at Ballet Arts, Clark Center for the Performing Arts, the Martha Graham School and Merce Cunninghan Studio, becoming proficient in Ballet, Jazz, African and Modern Dance.

In 1970, Sheila became a founding member of the Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH), which was headed by Director Arthur Mitchell and Associate Director Karel Shook.

While a Principal Dancer with DTH, Sheila toured extensively in the United States, the Caribbean and Europe, performing as soloist in several works in the repertoire, including "Dougla," "Biofera," "Tones," and "Rhythmetron."

Sheila performed with other dance companies, both ballet and modern. She was Soloist and Ballet Mistress with the Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theatre and toured China and Korea in 1986 with the Myung Sook Chun Dance Company, a modern dance troupe.

Sheila also danced the role of Rosa Parks in Gordon Parks' television movie, Martin….the Ballet, and performed in a production of Porgy and Bess, choreographed by Carmen De Lavallade, at the Metropolitan Opera House in 1991.

Sheila has also been a choreographer and teacher. She was an assistant to renowned choreographers Louis Johnson, John Jones, Talley Beatty, Walter Nicks and Walter Rutledge and choreographed pieces of her own for schools, theater groups and cultural organizations.

From 1983-86 she was Adjunct Professor of Dance at The College of Staten Island; taught Ballet in the adult and junior divisions of the Alvin Ailey American Dance School from 1986-97, as well as in NYC public schools and NAACP after-school programs.

Sheila has retired from performing, but is actively teaching and choreographing new works. In 2001 she was commissioned to choreograph a ballet for the Staten Island Ballet and in 2004 she revived the Nanette Bearden Contemporary Dance Theater, her sister's former company. Sheila also teaches ballet/jazz/exercise programs, specializing in beginning and senior dancers.

Sheila is currently on the Board of Directors of the Romare Bearden Foundation, a nonprofit arts organization preserving the legacy of renowned American artist Romare Bearden.

Sheila is also Recording Secretary for the Board of Directors of the Council on Arts and Humanities for Staten Island.
